A mum has hit out at her council after a doctor reportedly blamed her baby’s respiratory problems on her mould and damp home.
Beki Evans, 26, moved into the property last September with her partner Gareth Morgan, 37, and their two children Mia, four, and five month old Geoffrey.
But since then they have had ‘crazy’ mould, and damp problems the family say haven’t been properly addressed.
Ms Evans told Gloucestershire Live : “When we agreed to take the property, we knew that there was a lot of work that had to be done and that it was in quite a mess.
“We know that there was a hole in the roof and it seems that it has just had board and plaster put on the ceiling and painted. Not fixed.
“I called to tell the council that there was a massive problem with the damp, but nothing is getting done to resolve the issues that we are having.”
Ms Evans was heavily pregnant when she moved into the property and had her son three days later.
It was when she felt recovered from having Geoffrey that she started to call the council to get the damp in the property remedied.
Ms Evans said: “I have had inspectors out and they have said work needs doing. Then since I have had contractors come out around seven times and still nothing has been done.
“I have been calling every other day and still nothing is getting resolved. It rained constantly in October through to December so they mould that was growing went crazy.
“They have said that I need vents in the windows and extractor fans, but no one seems to actually be doing anything to sort this out.
“I cannot open the window in the living room as the windows are hanging at a funny angle.
"The radiators have no thermostat either so when baby starts crawling I won’t be able to have the heating on as when it is on they are on a high temperature and hot to touch.”
There have been numerous occasions where a contractor has been scheduled to visit but no one has arrived to do any work.
Ms Evans said: “I have waited in on five separate days and no one has turned up. I have not been able to call the contractors as there is no phone number on Google for MySpace.
“It is not fair how they mess people around and this is my time that they are wasting. I pay my rent to live here and it needs to be sorted out.
“The inspectors know that my son is unwell due to the damp and my daughter has an horrendous cough as well.
“I want to know why they think it is acceptable to let us live like this with the kids.
“Yes they have been out to wash the mould off the walls, but it is not going to stop the mould growing back and it has already started coming through again.
“There have been too many visits by people saying the same thing that work needs to be done, and nothing is actually done. It won’t be long before the mould has grown back to what it was like before if it does not get sorted."
When asked to respond to the issues, a Stroud District Council spokesperson said: “We are unable to comment on individual cases but the council takes matters of this nature very seriously and will work with tenants to promptly resolve matters which arise.”
