If you’ve been watching Wednesday, or have just finished binge-watching the hit Netflix show, you’ll associate actress Jenna Ortega – aka Wednesday herself – with long pigtail braids and a generally gothic beauty look.

Now Jenna is breaking away from that iconic Wednesday style with a brand new hair transformation, which has seen her chop off several inches of length from her ends to achieve a layered, shag haircut.

Jenna unveiled the look on her own Instagram grid over the weekend, tagging in her hairstylist, David Stanwell. David’s grid helpfully shows a whole bunch of close-up shots of the choppy haircut in all its glory.

“Today we did a thang. Fresh cut for@jennaortega,” he captions the first reveal snap.

Fans are floored by the change to Jenna’s look, and plenty are keen to find out what exactly to ask their own hairstylists for to get a similar mid-length, choppy look.

“What is this cut called? It looks great on her!” raves one, while another adds: “This is giving “the Rachel” but make it emo. I love it.”

A third pleads: “It's SOOOOO gorgeous!!! I love your work. Would you please tell me what the haircut is called?”

David hasn’t yet responded to the fan questions about what the cut is called, but luckily we have that essential intel for you. The chop Jenna is wearing is something in-between a shag and a “wolf” cut.

Here’s what you need to know…

“A wolf cut has shorter choppy layers on the top, blended into a long fringe and with longer length to the sides and back. The cut also has a soft, wispy feel. A trademark feature of the look is that the short hair has more volume and height while the longer hair falls flatter," says Neil Moodie, celebrity hairstylist and founder ofNeil Moodie Studio.

As for a more traditional-sounding shag, “It’s a softer, upgraded version of a mullet,” explainsLiam Curran, celebrity hairstylist and Tangle Teezer brand ambassador. “This look is more wearable in comparison to the more extreme, shorter-layered looks we saw in 2021. Not only is the new shag 2.0 cut softer, but the styling also has lots more bounce, volume and an overall more polished finish.

Other celebrities wearing wolf and shag cuts include the stylish likes of Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Alexa Chung.

Considering Jenna’s new cut has a touch of “teenage angst”, we think even Wednesday herself would approve of it.
