Before stepping down as senior royals and moving to California, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated a few Christmases on the other side of the pond. Queen Elizabeth II even invited Meghan to join the royal festivities at Sandringham before she and Harry tied the knot, which is something royal fiancées before her were not permitted to do. All eyes were on the Suits star when she made the annual walk to the St. Mary Magdalene Church that year.

When the cameras weren’t on them, a shop clerk had an encounter with the pair and offered them a holiday staple that they had different opinions about.

What Prince Harry found ‘weird’ when they bought their first Christmas tree

Ollie Wilkinson, a staff member at the Pines and Needles shop in London, previously spoke to BBC News about his interaction with Meghan and Harry when came into the establishment to buy a Christmas tree just before celebrating their first holiday together.

Wilkinson told the outlet: “I said ‘would you like this mistletoe?’ and [Meghan] said ‘yes that would be great.’”

According to the clerk, the prince looked perplexed by the plant and “squeezed one of the berries on it and was like ‘I find this stuff weird’ and she was like ‘Oh, I really like it.’ Then [Harry] walked off with the tree on his shoulder, holding her hand, and she was holding in her other hand a bunch of mistletoe.”

Wilkinson also revealed that they bought was a 6-foot Nordmann Fir tree.

Prince Harry was mistaken for a tree salesman when they moved to California

Fast-forward to 2020 after the duke and duchess moved to their Montecito home in Santa Barbara County and they were spotted Christmas tree shopping again.

James Almaguer, who is a sales associate at a store just a few miles from Meghan and Harry’s house called Big Wave Dave’s Christmas Trees & Pumpkin Patch, relayed the story to the Express about when the Sussexes were shopping in his store. Almaguer explained that the couple thought the shop was empty and went in to look around. However, there was one family inside and that’s when Harry was mistaken for a tree salesman.

“Megan and Prince Harry came into my work today and we sold them their Christmas tree,” Almaguer announced on social media at the time. “It was anticlimactic, but a very, very interesting experience. There was one family in there and their stoked little son ran through trees up to Harry and asked if he worked here not knowing who that is.”

Almaguer added: “They seemed like very nice people, honestly. Meghan sounds very kind and Harry sounded and acted like a chill lad honestly. I’m really glad they liked our trees. We got the best we could get. Very appreciative.”

The Sussexes released their first Christmas card as a family of four in 2021

The following year, Prince Harry and Meghan again celebrated Christmas in California but for the first time did so as a family of four following the birth of their daughter Lili.

On Dec. 23, they released their family holiday card which read: “This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a ‘Mama’ and a ‘Papa’, and Lili made us a family.”
