Princess Anne, 72, is in Uganda on a royal tour where she has been photographed for the last few days performing various engagements. On Thursday evening, the Twitter account @UKinUganda posted: “It was a pleasure to host Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal at the High Commissioner Kate Airey’s Residence where The Princess met UK charities operating in Uganda, inspirational Ugandans and Government officials to celebrate the thriving partnership.”
The royal wore a knee-length red button dress, with a white blazer on top for the occasion.
However, it was Princess Anne’s gold diamond brooch that caught the eyes of royal fans.
Anne accessorised with her gold ribbon brooch, which is made of gold studded with diamonds and is supposed to depict a loosely-knotted ribbon.
Although some reports say the brooch is meant to resemble a snake, it is more likely meant to be an abstract design.
The piece has been in Anne’s jewellery collection for five decades, with the first time she wore the brooch being at Buckingham Palace in February 1969.
The occasion was meeting Colonel Frank Borman, the American astronaut who served as commander of the Apollo 8 mission.
Over 50 years later, and Anne is still wearing this brooch on important royal tours to meet important guests, such as Thursday evening in Uganda.
This is not a surprise as Anne is world-famous for recycling clothes. She generally reserves the piece for daytime wear, though she has chosen it for some significant events, including a trip to Washington, D.C. in November 2014 to open an exhibition about the Magna Carta.
Princess Anne paired her gold ribbon brooch on Thursday with a three-strand pearl necklace and some simple pearl earrings to match.
She carried a sturdy black handbag and could also be seen wearing black kitten heels for the occasion.
Other times Princess Anne has worn the gold ribbon brooch includes at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service in London in 2015.
The piece is also suitable for occasions where understated jewels are appropriate, like in July 2015 when she wore it for the remembrance service of the victims of the Srebrenica massacre.
However, the ribbon brooch also works for more upbeat events, like the annual Royal Ascot races.
Anne wore the brooch with a pale blue ensemble at Ascot in June 2016.
For many years now, Princess Anne has chosen the brooch for Easter Sunday services at Windsor.
For instance, she wore the brooch on Easter in April 2017, and also wore it pinned to a blue coat on Easter Sunday back in April 2018.
Anne famously posed on Valentine’s Day in 2007 with the rest of the Windsor women who ditched their spouses at lunchtime that year to attend a Women in Business Reception at Buckingham Palace.
On this occasion, Princess Anne accessorised with her iconic gold ribbon brooch.
