Research by Staybridge Suites, part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, recently revealed the top UK cities for a summer break.

Manchester took the top spot, followed by Newcastle and Bristol.

The cities were ranked based on their summer amenities, including rooftop bars, percentage of green spaces, riverside activities and lidos, outdoor pools and open water swimming areas.

Those who fancy a short break this summer can find great deals in the top-ranking cities:

  • Best Western Bristol hotel rooms from £47 per night
  • Booking.com Bristol hotel rooms from £27 per night
  • Premier Inn Manchester hotel rooms from £35 per night
  • Late Rooms Manchester hotel rooms from £25 per night
  • Booking.com Newcastle hotel rooms from £20 per night
  • Hotels.com Newcastle hotel rooms from £25 per night
  • Staybridge Suites Newcastle studio suites from £95 per night

As well as being home to the most rooftop bars outside of London, Manchester has tons of bars and restaurants, which line the river Irvwell and the Bridgewater canal.

The northern hotspot is also great for watersports enthusiasts, who can try their hand at canoeing, sailing and windsurfing at the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre or go open water swimming in and around the city centre.

While it doesn't have as many rooftop bars as Manchester, Newcastle still has some great pubs and amazing areas of countryside close to the city, from ancient forests in Hareshaw Linn and quaint villages like Haydon Bridge, which is home to Hadrian's Wall, and there's a National Park on its doorstep.

Bristol, meanwhile, is a hub of summer fun right on the river Avon. It has loads of outdoor pools to relax by, including the historic Bristol Lido – a Victorian pool with a restaurant and outdoor bar with Mediterranean vibes.
