WONDERING where to jet off for a long weekend getaway without breaking the bank?

New research has revealed the best-value destinations to book this autumn, and the cheapest destination might surprise you.

The study, conducted by travel agent loveholidays, examined the average cost of three and four-day short-haul holidays over a range of weekends.

They included the price of flights and hotels on holidays departing between September 1 and December 31, 2023.

Taking the top stop for the least expensive destination for a long weekend away is Bordeaux in France.

The bargain destination has average holidays costing £96 per person.

Bordeaux is renowned as the "Wine Capital of the World", and it's also very easy to reach for Brits, as the flight takes less than two hours from most UK airports.

But that's not all – the city is also full of cultural treasures.

You could spend your days exploring the Bordeaux Opera House and CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art or strolling by the stunning Garonne River.

You could jet off for three nights in Bordeaux this November from £117pp, staying at the Campanile Bordeaux Ouest – Mérignac Aéroport.

Mahdia in Tunisia came in second, with an average price of £104pp, and it's an excellent destination for those chasing some winter sun without travelling too far.

The destination sees sunny days and average temperatures of 25C during autumn, and it takes an average flight time of four hours.

Closing up the top three with an average price of £133pp is Cullera in Spain.

The Spanish city is located right on the Mediterranean coast and is quite close to Valencia, too – so you might even head down for a day trip and some traditional paella.

Fourth place on the list goes to Paralia, Greece, where rates are, on average, £137 per person.

From here, you could even travel to the nearby seaside town to seaside town to see Mount Olympus.

While the little-known Bussolengo in Italy rounds out the top five with average weekend stays of £145 per person.
