At last , spring is here. Time to ditch your puffa for the only coat update you need to consider — the trusty trench. Showerproof and lightweight, and if you lift the collar it will keep out a chilly wind, too — especially if it has a lining like this one I’m wearing from M&S — it’s a style classic.

Although it was made famous by World War I army officers, the trench originates from the 1850s when Burberry and Aquascutum dreamt up the style. Pockets, lapels and wrist ties were functional additions. Traditional versions are double breasted with buttons, but I like this more streamlined, single zip coat. Shorter, above-knee versions can be teamed with jeans and T-shirts as well as a silky dress for socialising; not too long away now!

Effortlessly chic, the trench is the lynch pin of many a celebrity wardrobe. The Duchess of Cambridge has given her royal seal of approval, frequently wearing one at official events. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie injected a little sex appeal to the classic when she wore a trench barefoot in her garden for a recent Vogue shoot.

This season, designers experimented with fabrics for their annual take on the trench. Prada opted for a smart check, while Saint Laurent showed a faux leather maxi version. Alexa Chung’s collaboration with Barbour (below) has an equestrian feel and gently flares at the back. If you want to stick to a classic beige, Next’s detachable hood (also below) is perfect for weathering bad hair days until next months’ coveted salon appointment.
