Mother, 56, is SLAMMED for waiting until her daughter was 27 to reveal she was ADOPTED – and her real mom had killed herself after giving birth

  •  A mom has been slammed for not telling her daughter that she was adopted
  •  She took to Reddit to explain that she didn’t have the ‘heart’ to tell her the truth
  •  The 56-year-old questioned if she was in the wrong

A mother has been slammed after admitting to the world that she didn’t tell her daughter that she was adopted until she was 27-year-old.

The 56-year-old woman took to Reddit to share the story of how her daughter, 27 – whom she referred to as Alice – discovered she was adopted in a since-deleted post.

She explained that her sister, Grace, had Alice when she was 18, but soon after giving birth, she became depressed and killed herself.

After the death of her sister, the unknown woman decided to raise Alice as her own – telling people that she was the twin of her son, George, now 27.

She questioned if she was in the wrong in a thread titled, ‘Am I the A**hole,’ for not telling her daughter that she was adopted sooner.

She explained: ‘I, 56, have three children. I’ll use fake names.  George, 27m, Alice 27f, Grace, 18F.

‘I was pregnant with George when my sister Grace got pregnant around the same time, much younger. I was 29 and she was 18, my parents were completely unsupportive of my sister continuing or having her baby and it resulted in her getting a job and moving in with her boyfriend, who wasn’t the best. ‘

After Grace gave birth to Alice, she was overwhelmed with emotions and ‘hormones’ and sadly took her life.

After Grace’s death, Alice’s biological father refused to care for the baby – prompting the Grace’s sister to jump in and raise Alice as her own.

‘We’ve since raised Alice and George as twins, which is easy, they’re both blonde with blue eyes. My parents and aunts went along with everything and after some time, we just thought it was too late to tell her,’ she added.

However, when Alice grew up and was expecting a child of her own, news broke about her adoption.

‘My wonderfully smart husband decided to tell her because she’s pregnant and said she needed to know “just in case,” and now she’s refusing to speak to me.

‘I did everything I thought I could to make her happy, and healthy. I feel like I did such a good job as she never even realized. I was there for her, I just never had the heart to tell her.

‘I feel like if there was a mother out there I would’ve told her – but there wasn’t – I was there,’ she explained.

At the end of the post, she questioned: ‘Am I the a**hole?’

People on the web flooded the comments section and slammed the mom for keeping the secret from her daughter.

One person said: ‘So look. I’m adopted, my brother is also adopted, our situations are complicated too, and yet I was raised knowing this always, I don’t have a moment of betrayal finding it out.

‘Lying like this, especially claiming they are twins the entire time, is so completely uncalled for.’

Someone else commented: ‘Soft you’re the a**hole. If I was your daughter I would be furious because I’m also adopted and I can’t imagine finding out at her age.

‘However, I understand somewhat why you did it. It was painful for you knowing that your sister couldn’t deal and it sounds like that is what led to her untimely death.

‘I was almost raised by my aunt and uncle. In fact they took care of me my first year of life. However they decided due to family dynamics it was better for everyone concerned if I wasn’t adopted by them. I was placed with my adoptive parents on my first birthday.

‘It would have been better had you told her maybe not as a child but maybe a late teen before she got pregnant.’

‘You’re the a**hole. “My children are on my side” – do you mean your real children? Because one is clearly not on your side,’ another user commented.

Someone else said: ‘You’re the a**hole. Just because they’re children doesn’t mean they can’t, shouldn’t or don’t have a right to know. I don’t think she’ll stay mad for long if you’ve really been such a good mother…but lying to someone their entire life can be a bit though to get over. ‘

‘You’re the a**hole, what were you thinking?! Suddenly at 20, she discovers she’s been lied to her whole life. This is going to cause lasting trauma,’ another user wrote.

One user added: ‘You’re the a**hole, this is a huge betrayal. Everyone I know who was adopted – even inter-family adoption – has always known they were adopted in age appropriate terms. You’ve really failed her by concealing this.’

‘You’re the a**hole. Why in earth did you ever think that was a good idea. Obviously they would need to know sooner or later.

‘Why was the truth so hard for you? YTA for creating this mess and handling it so very badly,’ someone else added.
