It’s no secret that Halsey is a talented songwriter. Ever since she started releasing her songs to the world, she’s received acclaim from fans, critics, and peers alike. The “Graveyard” singer has explored all kinds of unique themes within her lyrics and is championed for the emotion that she infuses into her music. Because Halsey’s songs are so incredibly intricate, one would think it takes her a great deal of time to write them. However, The Players Table star actually writes most of her music with lightning fast speed.

For most songwriters, the amount of time it takes them to write a song generally varies. Halsey’s peer and friend, Taylor Swift, for example, has been candid that her process is different every time. For example, Swift wrote her song, “Lover” very quickly in the middle of the night. Contrastingly, she mulled over the concept for her song “The Man” for years before she was able to write it. Halsey, on the other hand, is almost always able to write songs with a swiftness. In fact, sometimes it only takes the “Ghost” singer 20 minutes to write a tune.

“It usually takes me 20 to 90 minutes to write a song because once I start, I don’t stop,” Halsey revealed back in 2015 when she spoke to Interview Magazine. “If I start writing a song and you try to have a conversation with me, you’re a bad person. I like when it’s really organic, so I try to knock it out in one shot. Some of these songs on the new record just kind of spilled out of me and those are the ones I keep. The ones that people are pulling apart and saying, ‘You should do this and you should do that,’ those songs never make the record because they’re not real.”

Continuing on, Halsey revealed that songwriting is both an instinctive process and something that’s a skill. “You can tell if there’s magic in something,” the “Bad At Love” artist revealed. “When you start it, you want to finish it and you want it to be perfect. If you’re not inspired and you’re working hard to pull inspiration from somewhere and make a song something it’s not, then it’s very contrived and I don’t like to write music that’s contrived. As a songwriter, pop music really is a love and a joy and a science, and I feel like a lot of people look at pop music with a very formulaic perspective in numbers and patterns, but an outsider would think that the process is very natural. It is, but there are a lot of times where people treat it like a sport. There are tricks you can pull, different combinations that make something better. I don’t really think I approach it that way, but I definitely have a love for the science that is pop song writing.”
