The UK has finally made a last ditch attempt at summer and now, Wetherspoon is set to make these final sunny days even better, by offering a price slash across food and drink.

The low-cost pub chain will be marking prices down by 7.5% for just one day.

On Thursday, if you spend £10 on food and drinks, it will cost £9.25 instead. In Scotland, the deal will only apply to food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to licensing laws.

And the reason for this offer? Well, it’s down to the politics of chain founder, Tim Martin.

The offer is to mark Tax Equality Day, as Tim believes a permanent VAT reduction will benefit all pubs and restaurants across the UK.

Tim said: ‘The biggest threat to the hospitality industry is the vast disparity in tax treatment among pubs, restaurants and supermarkets.

‘Supermarkets pay zero VAT in respect of food sales, whereas pubs and restaurants pay 20%. This tax benefit allows supermarkets to subsidise the selling price of beer.

‘Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades because of the tax disadvantages which they have with supermarkets.

‘It means that the hospitality industry is subsiding supermarkets because of the tax rules.

‘We urge the Chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets.’

In the last year, 22 Spoons branches are up for sale or under offer.

Tim believes the prices differences between supermarkets and pubs have meant more drinkers are opting out of going to their local, in a bid to save money.
