SUMMER is in full swing, so it's time to switch up your gardening routine.

Thanks to high temps, it's much harder to keep your garden in tip-top shape.

Thankfully, the landscaping experts at Marshalls have shared everything you need to do to maintain your lush greens, even during a heatwave.

Plus, they revealed what not to do to your garden if you want it to survive through the summer.

DO UNDERSTAND YOUR GARDEN'S MAKEUP

To beat the summer heat, it's important to know the makeup of your garden to plan accordingly.

For example, you may want to add mulch to your flower and vegetable patches to keep cool if they are in a particularly sunny spot.

DO WATER IN THE MORNING OR EVENING

It may seem like your plants need extra water during hot weather, but if you water them more than once a day, they may become too saturated.

Instead, opt for watering during the cooler time of day in the morning or evening.

Even better, get ahead of the next heatwave by adding a water butt to your garden, so you can recycle rainwater for plant watering.

DO WATER AND ADD SHADE TO YOUR VEGETABLE PATCHES

Vegetable patches can be especially tricky to take care of in the warmer summer months.

To make sure your crops remain healthy, remember to water your veggies at least once a day.

You may also want to shelter them from the sun with a small canopy.

DO PACE YOURSELF

Gardening is not an easy job, so be sure to pace yourself while you're working outside.

Try working on your garden during cooler hours and take time to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

DON'T MOW THE LAWN

If it's very hot outside, your lawn will be trying extra hard to access water.

So try to refrain from mowing the lawn during especially high temps, but if you can't resist, make sure to leave grass cuttings to help shelter the soil.

DON'T OVERWATER THE GRASS

Like your plants, it may be tempting to water your grass more than normal in the heat.

However, overwatering grass can lead to its demise and therefore grass should be watered during the cooler time periods and only once a week.

DON'T TRIM PLANTS

If you need to trim down your plants, try to wait until it gets a bit cooler outside,

Trimming plants signals them to grow by using vital water and energy, which needs to be saved during high temps.

DON'T PLANT ANYTHING NEW

Summer may seem like the perfect time to garden but resist the urge to plant any new greenery.

Digging up soil during intense heat can cause a loss of water and increased temperature for the soil, which ultimately will lead to your plant's demise.

Instead, do all of your planting during the cooler months or use companion planting to help shade the soil.

DON'T USE A HOSEPIPE

If it's especially hot in your area, a hosepipe ban may be on the way.

When that's the case, you can just use a good old-fashioned watering can, ideally with recycled rainwater.
