Jeremy Vine made a blunder when he sent a message of support to Anton Du Beke.
The BBC presenter, 58, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was sharing his ‘best wishes’ with the Strictly judge, 57, after he revealed his father had stabbed him as a child.
Anton told Kate Garraway on Life Stories that he spent three days in hospital after the attack on his leg and his stomach which happened on Boxing Day.
Reacting to the incident, which Anton said he had never spoken about before, Jeremy retweeted a story with a headline that read: ‘Anton reveals his father stabbed him to death as a child.’
With Anton very much alive, X users were quick to point out the error, with one saying: ‘Thought death was fatal ?’
Several attempted black comedy including: ‘Tbf, he’s done pretty well for himself since……seeing as he’s come back from the dead.’
While another quipped: ‘Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good headline .’
Jeremy had captioned the post: ‘Horrendous story, best wishes to Anton.’
The author had explained earlier this week on the ITV show that his father Antal ‘took a turn’ against him after he discovered a flair for dancing as alcoholism gripped him.
Recalling the incident, he continued: ‘I got stabbed in the leg and in the stomach because of a fight on Boxing Day and it was an idiotic situation.
‘I remember walking out of the house to walk up to the hospital holding my leg and a police car drove past and I waved them down and I said “he’s in there with a knife.”
‘Anyway, they carted him off and I ended up in hospital for three or four days. My only concern was getting back into the studio and dancing and the embarrassment of it.’
Anton said he told people he had ‘pulled a hamstring’ when asked about his leg injury because he was embarrassed.
Kate later told the audience Antal was cleared in court of wounding his son and when he died, Anton did not attend his funeral.
Anton, who was hailed a ‘national treasure’ after sharing his story, later responded to his supporters with a powerful message, telling other child abuse victims they are ‘not alone.’
He was the longest-serving professional dancer on Strictly, having been a fixture on the BBC One series since it began, until he swapped the dance floor for the judging panel to take over from departing judge Bruno Tonioli permanently in 2021.
