IKEA on Monday launched a pilot for its new “Buy Back & Resell” program at its Conshohocken location in Pennsylvania, which is scheduled to run until September 19. The new service, which IKEA plans to eventually make permanently available across select U.S. markets, will allow customers in the U.S. to return gently used, fully assembled furniture in exchange for store credit.

The program plays a key role in IKEA’s goal of evolving into a circular business by 2030. The retailer aims to utilize only renewable or recycled materials with new sourcing methods in order to design and manufacture all products in a more sustainable manner.

“At IKEA, we are passionate about making sustainable living easy and affordable for the many, and want to be part of a future that’s better for both people and the planet,” said Jennifer Keesson, Country Sustainability Manager, IKEA U.S. in a release. “We hope the Buy Back & Resell service inspires our customers to live a more sustainable life at home while giving their used furniture another life and a second home.”

With safety in mind, recalled products as well as certain product categories, including chests of drawers, will not be included in the Buy Back & Resell service.

Elsewhere, Apple is expected to release the iPhone 13 and AirPods 3 this September.
