The new movie Tom & Jerry is now in theaters and it’s going to be a surprise box office hit for Warner Bros.

In addition to being in theaters, the movie is available to stream at home on HBO Max at no extra charge to subscribers.

50% of all movie theaters in the U.S. are still closed due to the pandemic, including major markets like New York and Los Angeles, so no movies are expected to be doing major business right now. The theaters that are open also have to adhere to capacity restrictions.

Deadline reports that Tom & Jerry earned $4 million on Friday (February 26) and the film is expected to gross $12.5 million for the full opening weekend. That will be the second highest weekend gross during the pandemic, behind only Wonder Woman 1984′s $16.4 million opening weekend.

These numbers are giving industry insiders some hope that the box office will be able to recover once the pandemic is over.

Chloe Moretz, Michael Pena, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, and Ken Jeong star in the new film.
