80-year-old Mary Berry’s sensational baking talents put her on the map for many years, so naturally at home she owns the kitchen. But with lockdown leaving families separated for fear of further spreading coronavirus, Mary has had to adapt her usual cooking strategy which usually covers her extended family, and has learnt to prepare a cut down version just her and husband Paul Hunnings – something she admits feels “very strange”.

Normally, the kitchen whizz is joined by her son and daughter and five grandchildren but sadly for the moment that’s all changed, as it has for everybody across the nation.

But from time to time she will cook a “big batch” of goodies and drops them off on her children’s door steps, and has returned to an old favourite of hers – stewed beef with pickled walnuts.

Mary also isn’t impartial to food preparation either, freezing the remainders of her larger meals to save for another occasion.

But while she’s trying to adapt to this new way of life, she confessed it’s been “difficult” not seeing so much of the family.

“I think that we’re very lucky in this day and age to have all these different forms of communication,” she said in a recent interview.

“And because I’m quite ancient, I’ve got a lot of girlfriends who’ve lost their husbands or their other halves.

“It’s been great having phone calls with them. What are they getting up to? How are they coping?”

The Best Home Cook host continued to explain she has a little daily routine to keep herself busy, something she wouldn’t have had time to do before Covid.

“I’ve made it quite a task each day to ring somebody and have a long, long chat,” Mary explained.

“I never would have thought about doing before, because there wasn’t time.”

Fans were pleased to find out that she and Paul have both received their first dose of Covid vaccines, as they fall into the over 70s category.

“I was so pleased, particularly for my husband,” she told Radio Times.

“I would encourage everyone, if it’s offered to them, to definitely have the vaccine.”

It comes as the government have hailed the vaccine scheme an “extraordinary feat” after bypassing the 15 million mark since vaccinations began being administered in January.
