The ‘Cool for the Summer’ hitmaker is looking forward to a new beginning while showing off a fresh buzz haircut as the year of 2021 is coming close to an end.

AceShowbizDemi Lovato debuted a new look on Christmas. The former Disney darling has shaved their head and showed off the fresh buzz cut on Instagram. The brunette stunner simply captioned the post with hashtag “freshstart,” without giving any further explanation.

The 29-year-old singer/songwriter made no secret of their desire to go bald after coming out as non-binary. In an interview with Glamour magazine earlier this year, they said cutting hair would represent “a symbolic shedding of the heteronormative box (they were) confined in for years.”

Demi’s failed engagement to Max Ehrich also added fuel to the desire for a change. “This past year, I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign.’ I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth,” the star explained. “I hooked up with a girl and was like, ‘I like this a lot more.’ It felt better. It felt right.”

The songstress then reflected on fans’ negative reactions after going public with pink hair and half of shaved head back in 2014, “It reignited that fear inside of me of being who I really am.”

Before going bald on Christmas, Demi had rocked pixie haircut for the first half of the year before changing it into a long mullet. “I cut my hair off in November and I feel so free, I feel more authentic to who I am and I also feel like I used to hide behind my hair,” the singer told Ellen DeGeneres.

The “Heart Attack” hitmaker also opened up on how they used their long tresses as a shield, “I’ve talked a lot about my past, being in recovery from an eating disorder, and I used to use my hair to hide behind – it would cover my body.”

“So when I used to do all this work on myself, I thought, ‘What is something I’ve been holding on to my whole life…?’ I feel more myself now.”
