"I'd rather be in Jamaica" is a phrase I should probably get tattooed to my forehead at this point. But somehow, some way, I've yet to lose all my marbles since the pandemic turned the world upside down in March 2020.

Regardless, I've been longing to be with my family in the Caribbean — to be in nature, to be in the water, to breathe in clean, fresh air, and to actually be able to look up and see all the stars at night. In the "before" days, this was a trip I made several times a year, so to now be deprived of that has been eating away at me.

With vaccine inequity (and a whole other bag of issues, if I'm being honest) leading to low jab rates over there, taking the risk to go hasn't felt like the safest or most responsible thing to do, personally. So I've been finding ways to ease my longing right here in Brooklyn.

Thankfully, Nest New York and Gray Malin's summer collaboration has helped to ease the pain a bit with this deliciously-scented candle.

To shop: $48; sephora.com

With notes of white tea and coconut, the fragrance brings me back to the water — a place I'd typically go to clear my head and take a break from the everlasting nonsense of everything. And when I also burn some incense while the candle is lit, the smoky element makes me feel like I'm right back on the south coast of St. Elizabeth — minus the brigade of mosquitos, or maskitta, as we call them.

Spending nearly $50 on something that you're going to literally light on fire seems… not smart in general. However, I'm fortune enough to be in a position where $48 isn't going to put a hole in my pocket. Plus, it's way less than a plane ticket, and Nest candles are slow burners.

I can also sleep well at night knowing that finding a way to curb my yearning to be back in Jamaica isn't going to get anyone sick — and you definitely can't put a price on that.
