ORIGINALLY opening in France, Mama Shelter has since branched out across Europe and the US, with new openings in Lisbon, Rome and Dubai in the next year.

Mama Shelter in Shoreditch, the first to open in the UK, is the hipster’s answer to a grown up hostel, in hotel form.

The hotel is located in Shoreditch in London, a short walk from Bethnal Green underground or Cambridge Heath overground.

There is no car parking at the hotel but there are streets nearby.

Mama Shelter has a large restaurant, lounge and bar on-site which includes an outdoor terrace.

Also inside the hotel is a laundry room and gym, open to guests.

To venture outside, round the corner is the V&A Museum of Childhood, while Shoreditch popular haunts are Brick Lane, Boxpark and Columbia Flower Market on the weekends.

It is also home to lots of quirky attractions such as Bounce for ping-pong, Bar Kick for table football and Flight Club for darts.

The restaurant is popular with young brunchers at the weekends, which continues into the evening with live DJ sets on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The food is very French-inspired, such as confit duck poutine, mussels and ratatouille on the menu, although also have boozy happy hours featuring the Italian Malfy gin, with drinks just £6 during the week.

Head outside to the interior garden terrace for a cool breeze and French Riviera style wicker chairs and striped canopies, all overlooked by the hotel rooms above.

Breakfast highlights include the duck hash or the cornbread pancakes, while Sunday roasts are served at the weekends.

There are just three room types – small, medium and large – and while nothing fancy, the simple rooms come with a tea making station and Mama toiletries, as well a wide screen TV with complimentary films.

Don’t expect many added luxuries, such as dressing gowns or room service. However, it is their hotel packages where guests can personalise their stay, with two new options after reopening after lockdown. 

For couples wanting a bit of fire, the Staycation package includes a ‘Sexy Mama’ box, free bottle of fizz and complimentary adult films.

You can also ask to "Move Me Up" for a quieter room for an extra cost.

Pets up to 12kg are allowed in rooms on the ground and first floor, with a surcharge of £25.
