CATCHING a flight from a small airport might seem like a good idea.

Shorter queues, less chance of getting lost, a short walk to the gate – it would make sense that flying from a little airport instead of a large one would save you time.

But an airport systems operator has revealed that they also have their drawbacks and can make the journey take longer.

Reddit user u/grilldcheese2 replied to a post on the community sharing site which asked: "People who work in the airline industry, what are some things you think everyone should know about flying?"

The user explained that when you fly from a small airport, the knock-on effect of any delays can be huge, so if a flight before you was delayed then yours is likely to be too.

They wrote: "I work in systems operations, so I try to keep it all on schedule.

"If you're flying from a small airport, it may be convenient, but it's also more limited on resources.

"That means if it delays, there's not much time to mitigate it. Could go on for quite some time."

LIAR FLYER

I’m a pilot and there is a lie we always tell passengers

To try and avoid getting held up, the user advised passengers to catch a flight early in the morning as it's less likely it'll be delayed.

He continued: "If you don't want to be delayed, take the earliest flight.

"There's a bit of a rest overnight each night to start with a clean slate, but late in the day the chances are your plane has done multiple flights already.

"If any of those are delayed, yours is delayed too."

Meanwhile, a pilot has revealed the lie they always tell passengers during a flight if they are delayed.

Also writing on Reddit, a pilot explained that when a flight is delayed, they will often say they can "make up the time" while in the air – but this isn't true, especially on shorter flights.

They wrote: "There is very little we can actually do to 'make-up time'.

"The longer the flight, the more we can do, but still, we're talking 5-10 minutes, not an hour."

Airline passengers could be in line to get compensation if their short flight is delayed by just an hour under new plans.

Here's why you should never fly after midday during the holidays.
