OVER-50s travel specialist Saga said bookings for its cruises next year are ahead of pre-pandemic levels. 

The news suggests holidaymakers are becoming more confident about travelling again after the Covid vaccine roll-out.

Boss Euan Sutherland said: “Following the successful restart of operations in our travel business, we continue to work towards a full return to service.”

But the business lost £51.2million in the six months to July 31 as Covid travel restrictions hit hard. That compares to a £34.2million loss a year earlier.

The company was careful not to get too carried away with recent successes, warning: “There remains some uncertainty within the travel industry surrounding the longer-term impact of Covid-19.”

The wider group had a pre-tax profit of £700,000, compared to its losses of £55.5million a year ago.
