Forest Green Rovers’ sponsor – drinks firm innocent – will plant more than 10,000 trees after pledging 50 for every 0-0 draw in the professional game in the UK last season.
The 215 goalless draws will lead to 10,750 trees being put in the ground.
Anna Bateson, innocent’s UK marketing director, said: “The project has ensured that for every game that netted zero over the past season, the environment is the winner.” Rovers chairman Dale Vince said: “We’ve had fun with innocent this season while spreading an important message.”
League Two Rovers were named the world’s greenest football club by governing body FIFA for initiatives including its use of renewables and vegan-only food sales on match days.
Dale, a champion for the United Nations’ Sports for Climate Action, put sustainability at the heart of the club’s ethos after taking over in 2011.
