‘That is NOT a chip butty!’ Viewers slam This Morning cooking segment as chef Nisha Katona puts a ‘twist’ on the classic sandwich by putting potatoes in a wrap with apples and chutney

Viewers of This Morning slammed a cooking segment today as chef Nisha Katona put a ‘twist’ on a chip butty.

The ITV presenter impressed Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield today as she ‘pimped up’ the classic sandwich by placing potatoes into a wrap and adding chutney, green chilli pickle and slices of apple.

Tossing the dish together on the programme, Katona explained: ‘This is honestly how Indians pimp their Western staples.’

However the dish caused controversy online, with one writing: ‘No point calling it a chip butty. It’s hardly with a twist. You’ve just changed the whole thing.’

Another wrote: ‘Nisha, that is not a chip butty, where’s the bread? The chip butty didn’t need pimping because we’ve already done it – it’s called a cheesey chip butty.’ 

Launching the segment, Nisha explained: ‘Me and my brother would go to the chippy and by the time our backs were turned, our parents would have added three cardinal pimping ingredients; red onion, fresh chilli and coriander leaves.

‘They’d run it up a chibatta and that would  be an Indian chip butty. I’ve taken that up a notch or two.’

Meanwhile Holly admitted it ‘didn’t count as a chip butty because it’s in a wrap’, saying: ‘I think it’s quite healthy, I think it’s not that bad.’ 

While Holly and Phil were blown away by the dish, the meal sparked controversy online, with many insisting it ‘was not a chip butty’

Nisha added: ‘When you deep fry something, it’s almost like steaming it isn’t it? It’s a typically great wake up snack we would have.’

The TV chef advised adding tumeric, salt and fenugreek powder to the raw potatoes, before lightly frying them in a pan.

She then suggested mixing them with her ‘pimping’ ingredients, before adding chaat massala to the dish, tossing it all together.

Assembling the wrap, she heated up a chapati on a skillet, placing chutney and green chilli pickle inside, before adding slices of Granny Smith apples.

A third praised the sandwich but confessed they were confused by meal, saying: ‘Sure it’s lovely but it’s not a chip butty.’ 

A fourth added: ‘I love a chip butty. It doesn’t need a twist.’
