This online quiz will determine if you are naughty or nice when it comes to gift-giving during the festive season. Do you spend all year thinking about what you’d get a loved one, noting ideas down as you go? Or do you love to joke around, and purposely gift something the recipient will never use – such as a pair of washing-up gloves?
It comes after research found nearly seven million Brits have held their hands up to being questionable gift-givers – with clothes that don’t fit, tea towels, and even deodorant, topping the list of self-confessed bad presents.
Broken mugs, pants, and old CDs also appeared on the list, as well as out-of-date chocolates, and washing-up gloves.
The study of 2,000 adults found more than half (51 percent) have given a gift they know the recipient won’t like – and 41 percent of those say they’ve given a gift “just to get a laugh”.
Meanwhile, 42 percent admit to re-gifting something they had already been given. And washing-up gloves, mouse mats, and toothbrushes were also highlighted as gifts to avoid giving this season.
Jessica Lovelace, spokeswoman for Hallmark, which commissioned the research to launch its Christmas ornament collection ahead of the festive gifting season, said: “It’s clear that the nation is split between being naughty or nice when it comes to gift-giving – there are some truly surprising presents on the list.
“The best gifts to give this Christmas are ones that show you have truly considered the recipient, to ensure you can avoid any festive disappointment.
“Christmas is all about creating moments that count – and giving something meaningful to a loved one is the best way to show you care.”
The survey also found 28 percent believe money or a gift card is the go-to present – simply because they have no other ideas (35 percent), and it’s easier than going to the shops (23 percent).
But it’s not all bad news, as 14 percent rate themselves as brilliant gift-givers. When it comes to the best kind of present to receive, “one which is thoughtful” is a winner for 34 percent.
Nearly one in five (17 percent) would like something that aligns with their hobbies, while two-thirds claim beautiful wrapping is important to them – and 58 percent also feel it is essential to share a meaningful card, according to the stats, by OnePoll.
Jessica Lovelace, for Hallmark, added: “A lot of the time, it’s the thought that counts when gift-giving, with presents that align with hobbies or interests being the key to success.”
