A woman has been sent a shocking note from a neighbour making threats because she walked around her own flat barefoot at night. On Thursday, the woman took to the internet after receiving the frightening noise complaint note from her neighbour.
She was shocked to receive a complaint threatening to “report her to the police” if she did not stop walking around barefoot in her apartment.
The incident appears to have happened in Germany, as the neighbour’s note references Ruhezeit, which means “quiet hours”.
This is the time in Germany when people are legally obligated to keep quiet. These rules usually apply between 10pm and 6am on a weekday as well as on Sundays. People are prevented from vacuuming, mowing the lawn, or playing loud music as they can receive an expensive fine.
The neighbour’s note read: “STOP WALKING BAREFOOT. If you keep doing that, and especially during the Ruhezeit/Night silence (22:00 – 06:00) I will report you to the POLICE for disturbance.”
The woman took a picture of the note and posted it to Reddit. As a caption, she wrote: “*Gasp”, imagine having the audacity to walk barefoot in your own apartment.”

The picture began tending on Reddit, and has received thousands of comments as people have found the note amusing yet baffling. One popular comment said: “I would pay money to hear that call from the police”.
Someone else in the comments, who claims to have been a 911 dispatcher, said they would get calls from unreasonable neighbours on a daily basis, and had people phone the police to complain about babies crying or people flushing their toilets.
One user joked it was time to get some “big chunky goth boots with lots of metal chains on them” to walk around the apartment. Somebody else suggested getting some “nice wooden clogs or dancing shoes” instead.
One commentator suggested the woman begin playing sounds of mouse squeaks and chewing from a loudspeaker aimed at the floor if the neighbour continued to bother her.
However, one inquisitive user had a suggestion for what the neighbour’s issue might actually be. They wrote: “If you walk barefoot you might have a tendency to plant your heels down hard, which can cause quite a bit of noise and vibration. Some people don’t realise what they’re doing, but on a wooden floor it can disturb people below.”
People in the comments seem to agree that this was likely the problem, and one user said it was “awful” living underneath a “heel-stomper”.
Another person said: “My neighbours stomp. Very loudly. No matter what shoes they do or do not put on, I can hear them stomp their way through the apartment. When this happens during the night it can really drive you nuts.”
