Mum is forced to send her six-year-old to school with a HUGE lunch after teachers feed him sugary snacks to ‘keep him full’: ‘Is this normal?’

  • Mum took to Facebook after she was forced to pack huge lunch for son aged six
  • The son’s teacher keeps a snack bowl full of sugar-filled treats he enjoys eating
  • She sent a kind note to the teacher asking not to feed him sugar-filled snacks
  • But the teacher told her to pack more food if she didn’t want her son to starve

A mum vented online after she was forced to send her six-year-old son to school with three lunchboxes packed with an ‘insane’ amount of food to ‘keep teachers happy’.

Sam packed her son extra lunch after his school teacher provided him with sugary snacks and accused her of ‘not packing him enough food’.

Her son’s school has two ‘nutrition breaks’ and she will often pack him two containers with half a sandwich, crackers or pretzels and fruit or vegetables.

A mum vented online after she was forced to send her six-year-old son to school with three lunchboxes packed with an ‘insane’ amount of food to ‘keep teachers happy’

Her son’s teacher keeps a bowl of ‘cool snacks’ in the classroom for children who are still hungry after lunch – but they’re typically used for ’emergencies’.

Her son and other kids often say that they are hungry so they can get themselves either a sweetened squeeze pouch apple sauce, yoghurt tube, Rice Krispies or chocolate granola bar as a treat.

‘I have enough issue with him eating one of those foods but on the Friday before last they gave him FOUR sugary snacks at school,’ Sam wrote.

The mum says her son’s school has two ‘nutrition breaks’ and often sends him with two containers, each with a half a sandwich, crackers or pretzels and fruit or vegetables

On this day her son consumed 33 grams of sugar; she believes children his age shouldn’t have more than 19 grams to 24 grams of sugar in a day.

She sent the teacher a message asking them to support her food choices and that he has a complete lunch packed each day.

The teacher responded: ‘Well what am I supposed to do when he’s still starving, if you don’t want him eating school snacks, pack more food.’

The mum asked other parents for advice on the situation and was met with fury.

‘You’re doing a great job limiting sugar for your kids, there’s no reason whatsoever that kids NEED sugar. I would keep doing what you’re doing,’ a mum wrote.

‘If she is offering snacks, they should be healthy options. I’d talk to the principal,’ another wrote.

The mum immediately asked other parents for advice on the situation and some agreed that the snack bowl was not a correct classroom item

Others admitted they were envious and wished their children had a snack bowl so they didn’t have to dedicate their mornings to planning extra snacks.

‘I do wish my sons school had a snack bin because it’s really hard financially for me to pack lunch every day and two snacks,’ a parent wrote.

‘Maybe some parents can make a classroom donation of healthy snacks,’ another suggested.
