  • Marcella fans have lambasted the final of the crime drama for ‘unbelievable plot’
  • In last night’s episode, fans saw undercover officer Marcella in a fatal shootout
  • Most characters were hit and fans were left disappointed with the cliffhanger

Marcella viewers have lambasted the final of the ITV crime drama for its ‘unbelievable plot’ after suggesting ‘it was like the writer couldn’t find an ending, so had everybody shoot one another’.

In last night’s episode, fans witnessed undercover detective Marcella Backland (played by Anna Friel) in a fatal shootout with the Maguire family, the notorious Belfast gang she had infiltrated as Keira Devlin.

But with most the main characters getting hit, and Marcella rushing off unscathed to escape on a private jet, some viewers were left disappointed with the cliffhanger, as well as the ‘unbelievable plot’.

One person wrote on Twitter: ‘I knew I shouldn’t have bothered to watch this latest series of Marcella. This was such a weak storyline and a total waste of eight hours.’

‘They’ve never quite recreated what was amazing about the first series but I bet there will be a series four,’ the viewer added.

Another said: ‘Disappointed in this series. Think I’m out if there’s another. Far too crazy, also didn’t help that I couldn’t care less about the Maguires.’

A third added: ‘Just watched Marcella and it’s a no for series four from me,’ while a fourth wrote: ‘Thank God that’s all over. What drivel. Anna Friel performed well but the plot was wholly preposterous.

However, it wasn’t all negative reaction for the finale, as one impressed viewer wrote on Twitter: ‘Marcella was absolutely brilliant! It had to be the best series to date.’

Another said: ‘Cracking third series of Marcella. Anna Friel as brilliant as ever… left nicely open for a series four too, which needs to be made pronto.

A third fan added: ‘Oh, I hope there is a Marcella series four. They can’t leave it like that!’

The final episode in the third series of Marcella saw the detective driving away from a scene of many suspected fatalities involving the infamous crime family, the Maguires.

The fatal shootout included her old police colleague DI Rav, a fan favourite, as he arrived on the scene just as Finn Maguire tried to kill Marcella, who had been playing the part of his devoted lover.

However, Rav’s death was not confirmed, and some fans are hoping a series four will reveal whether he survived.

Having taken the Maguire’s money and hired a private jet to an unknown location, Marcella is last seen escaping Ireland with Katy, the baby daughter of recently deceased parents Bobby (played by Martin McCann) and the Maguire’s Stacey Barrett (Kelly Gough).

Despite fans being divided over whether a fourth series should happen, ITV are yet to confirm whether more episodes of Marcella are planned.

Meanwhile, former Brookside star Anna Friel, 44, has spent the past five years inhabiting Marcella, and yet she almost turned the role down.

‘The truth is I didn’t think I could offer anything new or different to the world of TV detectives,’ she explained to the Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine.

Reaction: However, it wasn’t all negative reaction for the finale, as one impressed viewer wrote on Twitter: ‘Marcella was absolutely brilliant! It had to be the best series to date.’

‘But the director said, “Let’s start and you’ll see how you can do it” and, gradually, I became more confident about making Marcella significantly different.

‘Key to the portrayal was emphasising her unpredictability, her fearlessness and the fact that she’s so lonely and doesn’t think she’s good at anything apart from her job.

‘But it was a close call. I often convince myself I can’t do a job and I almost talked myself out of this one.’

Anna may not be finished with the role that she so very nearly said no to.  Although Marcella was originally written as a three-series trilogy, the show’s Swedish co-creator Hans Rosenfeldt hints that there might be more.

‘This new series has a definite ending – audiences won’t be left guessing,’ he says. ‘But there’s an opening there for it to continue. So maybe we will see Marcella again…’
