Kate Middleton is one of the most photographed women on the planet, and she continues to impress royal fans with her effortless looks.

The Duchess of Cambridge's stylish outfits usually take centre stage in any photographs of her, with her glossy brunette locks and glam make-up looks complimenting them perfectly.

While we're quick to notice if Kate, 40, has switched up her hairstyle or is sporting a new make-up look, it tends to go unnoticed that she is rarely ever spotted wearing nail polish.

Many are quick to presume that having a colourful manicure is against royal protocol, but it turns out Kate's natural nails are actually just down to her preferences.

The Duchess' nails are always impeccably manicured and groomed, but she opts to go without coloured nail polish almost all of the time.

There is no official rule which prevents members of the royal family having a colourful manicure, and Her Majesty The Queen is regularly spotted sporting a light pink polish.

The Queen, 95, has reportedly not changed her manicure routine in decades, and her favourite polish is said by be cosmetics brand Essie, in the shade Ballet Slippers.

The soft pink shade has been wore by the Queen ever since 1989, and Kate also sported a very similar shade on her and Prince William's wedding day.

Kate's wedding day nails were painted in a sheer pink glossy polish, believed to be another product by Essie, but in the shade Allure.

Meghan Markle reportedly wore Ballet Slippers by Essie on her wedding day to Prince Harry, and she also opted for a similar shade for her and Harry's engagement photographs.

While it remains unknown whether there is a reason behind Kate's choice to go polish-free in public, she has frequently been spotted biting her nails during public appearances over the years, which could possibly explain why she prefers a natural nail.

Royal style expert Myka Meier previously explained that there are no official rules when it comes to manicures for royal family members, and she told Glamour: "There is no official royal protocol that says what the royal family must wear or even what products they should use.

"Each senior royal is trusted to make their style and grooming choices, including products they wish to use.

"While we have seen the Duchess of Cambridge wearing light-pink-colored or even clear polish in the past, one of her favourite new looks in recent years has actually been no polish at all!

"Instead she has simply opted for a buffed nail with a naturally squared, low-maintenance shape, which not only goes with everything she wears but looks clean-cut, natural, and gorgeous."
