Washing machine ownership is near 100 percent across the UK. Although these machines save Britons a lot of time when it comes to laundering their clothes, they must be kept in a good condition to ensure they function properly. You can keep them free from mould and remove any musty odours by undertaking the steps below.

Washing machines can begin to smell musty over time.

A musty smell can be emitted when you open the washing machine door or removing clothes from a machine.

This smell may be a sign it is time for you to clean your machine properly.

The problem is likely caused by a buildup of dirt, mildew, laundry detergent, residue and minerals.

Over time these products can cause a funky smell.

How to stop washing machines smelling

Run a regular, hot service wash

Using a cooler cycle regularly is kinder for the environment, but can encourage mould and bacteria to build up.

A service wash means putting on a cycle without any clothes in it.

If you put the cycle on a hot temperature, you can help alleviate the bacteria and smell.

Most manufacturers recommend you use this type of cycle on a regular basis to prevent smells.

Clean the seal

Mould and bacteria can develop and fester in the rubber seal around your washing machine door.

The washing machine will often need a good scrub to prevent buildup.

If the mould grows beyond a certain point, the only option may be to replace the door seal.

Leave the washing machine open

You can leave your machine door open to help remove the bad smell.

Leaving the door out can help air to circulate in the drum and prevent the growth of mould and bacteria.

Try to leave your detergent drawer open as well to try to air this area as well.

Washing out the drawer

Bacteria and mould can build up in your laundry detergent drawer over time.

You should try to remove the drawer every so often and clean it out to prevent smells over time.

Make sure to follow the instructions for your machine to prevent any damage to your machine.

Check the machine

Lingering bad smells may mean you have a partial blockage in your standpipe.

If you believe this is the case, you should use a drain unblocker to try to clear the pipe.

Drain unblockers may not prove successful, and if this is the case, you may need to call in professional help.
