Denver Center Theatre Company on Friday announced a dozen new shows for its 2022-2023 artistic season, including world premieres, holiday art installations and a visit from Talking Heads founder David Byrne.
The company, part of Denver Center for the Performing Arts, is offering six shows as part of its subscription-based service, with another six dubbed as added attractions. The former is heavy on drama, the latter on nontraditional programming (see below).
“This season is a season filled with celebration. Celebrating the artists on and off stage, celebrating stories that everyone can see themselves in, and celebrating the return of live performances,” said artistic director Chris Coleman in a Denver Center statement. “Audiences will get to experience classic productions that they know and love, as well as hear new stories from emerging playwrights.”
The new Theatre Company season begins Sept. 9, 2022, and will feature seven mainstage productions, including the musical “The Color Purple,” Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” and a new production of the audience-favorite “The 39 Steps,” Denver Center officials wrote.
The mainstream highlight is arguably “Theater of the Mind,” Byrne’s delayed world premiere show that’s still mysterious in its outlines. Inspired by both historical and current lab research, Theater of the Mind takes you on an immersive journey inside how we see and create our worlds. Co-created by Talking Heads frontman and artist David Byrne and writer Mala Gaonkar, the show uses stories from their own lives to shape a narrative you’ll see, feel, taste and hear.
It promises to be an immersive, tech-driven experience when it premieres Aug. 31 at York Street Yards, but few details are available beyond that. Co-written by Mala Gaonkar, it promises a narrative “you’ll see, feel, taste and hear.”
