UK supermarkets have issued an urgent cat food recall following concerns over cases of a rare disease. Authorities have alerted cat owners to infections from pancytopenia transmitted by food from select brands. More than 440 cats have come down with the illness, of which 284 have died.

What cat food has been recalled?

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is responsible for administering pet food advice in the UK.

They recently reported safety concerns around products specifically from Fold Hill Foods.

The manufacturers disclosed 21 products associated with the recent cases of pancytopenia.

They include:

The FSA has also issued advice for pet owners who buy from Fold Hill Foods.

They state people should “stop feeding them to your cat”.

People should also contact the relevant supplier, whether AVA, Applaws or Sainsbury’s.

Otherwise, people should ensure they know the signs and symptoms of pancytopenia.

What are the symptoms of pancytopenia?

Pancytopenia affects the blood by rapidly decreasing the number of platelets and is often fatal for cats.

They include:

• Low energy/weakness
• Pale gums
• Fever
• Collapsing
• No appetite
• Bleeding gums
• Blood in vomit or urine

Pancytopenia isn’t exclusively caused by contaminated food.

Cats may also develop the illness following other potentially serious diseases.

Other causes could include:

• Immune system disorders
• Blood cancer
• Toxins
• Bone cancer
• Sepsis
• Infectious diseases
