Weeds can make garden beds and borders look unsightly and can even grow back year after year. Some gardeners are not keen on using weed killers which can harm the environment surrounding the weed. In that case, gardeners can instead use mulch in beds and borders.

Mulch around plants not only insulates plants from cold weather but can combat weeds from growing back.

However, it’s important gardeners remember to clear the soil of weeds before putting mulch down.

Chris, a gardening expert from Squire’s Garden Centres has shared how to mulch beds and borders to suppress weeds.

Chris explained in a video from November: “The reason we mulch is it retains the moisture into the ground and it helps put nutrients into the ground.

“It suppresses weeds and it can also help with slugs and snails.

“Today, we’re going to be using bark.

“Before you mulch it’s really important to make sure that you clear the weeds away from the area.

“You need to make sure there’s no weeds before you put the bark down.

“You may get weeds that pop through in the spring so make sure you remove those because you don’t want them competing.

“They’ll take valuable nutrients out of the ground and you want to make sure the plants that you’ve got existing in there or are about to plant have the best start.”

Before mulching, ensure the area where you’re putting the mulch down has had a good water.

This is especially important if it’s been very dry weather.

Now, it’s time to mulch the desired area of the garden.

Chris continued: “Once you’ve chosen the mulch you’re going to use, you want to get that placed on the bed ready to go.

“We’re going to be using a spade today and what you want to be trying to do is a good two to three inches of bark or mulch over the bed or borders.

“This is going just underneath the plants but not right up against the plant because you don’t want the moisture to be too much which could rot some of the plants.

“You can use a fork afterwards just to spread that evenly so you get a nice level surface.

“Finally just keep an eye on your mulched beds and borders.

“You may need to replenish where areas have been exposed because if light gets back into those areas, weeds could grow very easily.

“So just top that up with the mulch that you’ve used and that’ll be good for another six to 12 months.”
