M&S demonstrates how to trim a new flower bouquet

Freshly cut sunflower bouquets can be found in most supermarkets right now. The flowers are popular and often look great in vases due to their cheerful appearance.

However, the cut flowers can often droop and fade over time, especially in vases.

Now, an expert has shared their top tips to keep sunflowers looking their best in vases throughout the summer months.

Knowing exactly how to care for sunflowers can help maximise their benefits and lifespan, according to Alex Biggart of 123 Flowers.

Alex explained: “Sunflowers are one of the most iconic family favourites and many of us choose them to add colour to our homes and gardens.

“And with a few simple tips, you can really make the most out of this beautiful species as a cut flower and keep them in top shape.

“The number one tip is to keep the water in the vase extremely fresh and change it every day as murky water makes sunflowers rot.

“When you take your sunflowers home, the first thing to do is cut the stems at an angle with sharp pruners to ensure they take in plenty of fresh water and avoid sitting on stagnant water.

“Put them in a clean vase with tepid water as cold water can take longer to absorb, and use a floral preservative regularly to give them a boost.

“Re-cut them when you change the water, too, and if possible try to cut them underwater to help prevent air bubbles from entering the plant’s vascular system.

“And perhaps the most surprising tip is to keep them out of direct sunlight, which might seem counterintuitive. Once cut, they don’t enjoy the sun as much as they did before.

“Cut sunflowers tend to last anywhere between six to 12 days, and following these tips can ensure you get the most out of your flowers for the longest time possible.”

Sunflowers are native to the Americas and are a symbol of peace and resilience to Ukrainians.

The plants have large, daisy-like faces and bright yellow petals that turn and move to follow the sun. They will then face the east to ruse again in the morning.
