This Morning: Alice Beer shares tips for removing pests

Keeping unwanted cats out of gardens can be difficult, especially when they’re pooping in flowerbeds or vegetable patches.

While cats pooping in gardens may not seem like a big problem, cat faeces can contain a parasite called toxoplasmosis.

Humans can catch toxoplasmosis from soil that has been contaminated by cat poop.

With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple solution to stop cats from pooping in gardens.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.6 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

Rosi Robinson posted: “I’ve been feeding a cat that keeps coming to sit on my shed and now it’s leaving poo every morning I get up.

“Tried pepper and no joy. Anyone got any tips to stop it.”

The post was inundated with comments but the most suggested solution was to stop feeding the cat and to use smells cats dislike like citrus fruits, lavender, peppermint and white vinegar.

Colette Thomasson said: “Buy some lavender plants. Cats dislike the smell and stay away.”

Marie Mia Belle replied: “You’re very kind. Strong-smelling plants like lavender are unpleasant to cats. Leaving orange or lemon peels out will also deter them as they dislike the smell of citrus.”

Andrea O’Neill suggested: “I’m sure there’s a curry plant they don’t like the smell of. Think citrus as well.”

Maria Michela Huseyin wrote: “Orange and lemon peel.” Myra Carter commented: “Peppermint oil, white vinegar and water.

“Clean up the poo and spray the area every morning until it stops coming. Worked for me.”

Lorna Foster commented: “Cats detest citrus fruit. Cut up oranges and lemons.”

Lemons, lavender, oranges and white vinegar can be bought online or from local supermarkets quite affordably.

Suntrail Lemons cost 55p for a packet of four from Tesco which works out at just under 14p per lemon. Stardrops White Vinegar Multi-Purpose Cleaning Spray costs 99p from Asda.

Sainsbury’s Oranges cost 30p each from Sainsbury’s and Lavender Hidcote Plants in a 9cm Pot cost £5.95 from Amazon.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using coffee grounds, a water pistol, plastic bottles, moth balls and cat deterrents.

Leesa Oreilly said: “Try coffee it should help.” Barbara Stunt agreed: “Coffee grounds do help to deter them.”

Valerie Harle suggested: “Try a water pistol, I’ve heard that works.”

Diane Antonio posted: “My neighbour put a plastic bottle of water in her garden and she ain’t had no problem after that.”

Gail Truman-Allen commented: “My neighbour used transparent bottles like coke bottles, lemonade etc with labels removed.

“Preferably large bottles filled with water. Seemed to work for her place on an area where the cat goes. Dot them around the garden see if it helps.”

Sandra Davies wrote: “You can buy cat deterrents from Amazon. They are brilliant.”

Terri Calder said: “Put out moth balls where you don’t want it to go. If you can stand the smell. When you see it squirt it with water. Good luck.”
