Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle gave viewers a glimpse into their new life in the US in a historic “tell-all” interview with Oprah Winfrey on Saturday. The landmark interview aired exclusively on Monday on ITV and saw the channel scrap their usual schedule in order to air the show. The interview took place in a friend’s garden, but it also saw the couple invite Oprah into their California home, which included a chicken coop.

Harry and Meghan showed the famous media mogul around their chicken coop which was filled with hens they had rescued from a factory farm.

The adorable coop included a wooden hen house which had the words “Archie’s Chick Inn” written on the side of it

The sign also said: “Established 2021”.

While in the coop, Harry told Oprah that Meghan had “always wanted chickens”.

Now it seems the couple have sparked a chicken coop frenzy.

VioVet, a supplier of pet foods, medication, accessories and equine products, has looked at how the interview has influenced people’s searches online.

In one day, from March 9 to March 10, searches for “how to make a chicken coop” increased by 700 percent.

Searches for “chicken coop ideas” increased by 350 percent, “walk in chicken coop” increased by 200 percent and “chicken coop plans” surged by 120 percent.

The company described the data has both “striking” and “fascinating”.

VioVet said: “The impact that people such as Harry and Meghan can have on our daily lives is quite striking and it’s fascinating to see how their interview with Oprah Winfrey has resulted in people looking into ways they can care for different animals.”

The company also said the outcome of the interview is “positive” if it means more people are taking an interest in wildlife and animals.

They added: “These statistics indicate a huge uplift in people exploring how they can do this from the comfort of their own homes, and if an outcome of the interview is that people are taking an interest in wildlife then that is a positive result.”

With more people spending time at home during lockdown, it’s not surprising that animal-lovers are looking for a weekend DIY project.

If you’re looking to build a chicken coop like Meghan and Harry’s, here are five top tips to keep in mind:

1. Look at pre-made plans

While starting from scratch may sound appealing, a ready-made chicken coop plan might save you some time.

Home decor site The Spruce recommends looking in a book or online for a plan that has detailed steps.

If you don’t find one you like, you may be able to build on an existing plan.

2. Size it properly

Like all animals, chickens are happier when they have more space to roost and walk around.

If you’re planning to have an outdoor run, The Spruce recommends having two to three square metres of space per chicken in the coop and four square feet in the run.

3. Provide the right roosting space

Chickens like to be off the ground when they roost so it’s best to build their roosts a couple of feet off the ground.

The Spruce recommends having six to ten inches of roosting space per chicken.

Remember, if the roosts are too high, the chickens will need a way to access them.

4. Use recycled materials

You will save money and do your bit for the environment if you use recycled materials.

However, you need to make sure you don’t use worn, low-quality or rotting wood.

5. Make it easy to clean

You will need to muck out your chickens regularly so make sure to include a human-sized door in your building plans, otherwise you may struggle.
