Home and Away star Kyle Shilling has teased what’s coming up for his character Mali Hudson, promising an ‘exciting’ future.

Mali, as viewers know, has proven to be quite the hit with a number of the Bay’s residents, after he came to the aid of Dean Thompson (Patrick O’Connor), offering to take on the running of the board shop to help him out.

The newcomer’s kindness and generosity proceeds him, though his selflessness comes with some inner turmoil, given that the Bay isn’t exactly close to where he typically resides.

‘Mali is always helping his sisters and brothers and mum, he’s always taking care of his nieces and nephews,’ actor Kyle told Metro.co.uk. ‘He doesn’t know if he’s doing the right thing [in coming to the Bay].

‘He has those days where he’s teaching surf lessons and he loves it, it’s everything that he wants to do: be in the ocean, be surfing, to work around surf equipment all day.

‘I think for him to see the positive reception that he gets from people in The Bay, besides Alf Stewart at first, and he very much thinks he could do this.’

Despite the on-screen conflict between Mali and Alf Stewart, Kyle told us that Ray Meagher is an ‘amazing, lovely man’, which put him at ease as he found filming these scenes ‘pretty scary’ given Ray’s soap icon status.

But while Alf clashed with newcomer Mali, Rose Delaney (Kirsty Marillier) is incredibly taken with him, with the pair having something of an instant spark.

‘Mali has this solid line where he goes: “When I see something I like, I go for it”‘, said Kyle, discussing the upcoming scenes. ‘Mali doesn’t do things half hearted, he goes in guns blazing with everything – his career, his family, his friendships, possible relationships.

‘I think what could potentially happen between him and Rose, it has the potential of going one of two ways.’

Things become complicated, however, when Mali discovers that Rose is a cop, something which he feels she should’ve been upfront about. The reason why this potentially changes things for him remains to be seen, but actor Kyle was quick to weigh in on whether its indicative of his character having a secret.

‘I love this question, he said. ‘I see it all the time, everyone’s saying: “There’s something about Mali that doesn’t sit right with me. He’s got a dark past”.

‘I mean who knows! All I can say is that Mali comes in as a happy chappy and is a good bloke. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see if he has a dark side or not.’

Consider us intrigued.

The jury is still out on whether Rose and Mali can make things work between them, but Kyle revealed that he would like to see a future for the characters in some capacity, whether that be as lovers or friends, branding the pair an ‘awesome duo’.

‘I think there’s a future either way,’ he added. ‘They’re both mature enough as characters that if things don’t work out relationship wise, there’s an awesome friendship there as well.’

As with any soap newcomer, fans can expect conflict and big decisions aplenty. ‘There’s a tug of war,’ concluded Kyle, discussing what’s to come. ‘Will he stay in The Bay? Will he go?

‘What’s in it for him with Rose, how do they set aside their differences with Mali not trusting police officers and Rose wanting to prove that not all of them are the same and you can’t judge people because of this or that – but I feel like that is something Mali has been told his whole life.

‘Mali definitely goes on one hell of a ride and to be the actor for Mali, I’m just like ‘is a drama’, I can see why this is happening. It’s exciting but I also feel like people might get annoyed with Mali. There’s a lot going on and to be the person that gets to act it all out, that’s exciting.’
