British gardening expert Carol Klein, who also regularly appears on BBC Gardeners’ World, has shared more of her tips for gardening in autumn. In the fourth instalment of her new five-part series on Channel Five, Autumn Gardening with Carol Klein, the horticulturist shared how to plant bulbs now ahead of spring.
Carol appeared on the programme from her garden in Glebe Cottage in Devon.
One of the gardening tasks she advised viewers to do this week was plant alliums, particularly allium schubertii.
These are “magnificent” flowers that sprout tens of colourful shoots – with flowers on the end of the shoots – in spring.
Carol explained: “So much of what we do in autumn is preparing for the coming seasons.
“Some jobs are a real treat.”
For Carol, one of these jobs includes planting allium bulbs.
She showed a bucket of bulbs to viewers, saying: “These lovely big solid bulbs.
“This is an allium called schubertii and it makes this sort of fireworks almost – a Roman candle with shoots going out in every direction.

“At the end of each one of them is a little purple flower. It’s magnificent.”
Carol began the task by putting compost in “this lovely concrete pot that’s covered in moss here”.
She continued: “And once we’ve enjoyed their spring display in this pot and I’ve taken off the old flowerheads, I’ll probably plant them right out into the garden.
“I’ll have them for years and years and years. We’re already old friends.”
After putting the “gorgeous compost” in the pot, Carol placed the bulbs in too.
She said: “I think I’ll probably only get about five in here. I can’t put more or they’ll be competing with each other.”
The garden pro warned viewers to place the bulbs in the compost with the “pointy side up”.
“Aren’t they lovely,” she cooed.
“Utterly gorgeous.”
Lastly, Carol put some compost over the top of the bulbs, completing the simple task of planting them.
She said: “They’re going to spend the winter nestled down in there until they come up in the spring and give us all a wonderful surprise.”
Speaking to the bulbs, Carol added: “Enjoy yourselves, have a nice sleep.”
