Following King Charles III’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey, the entire Royal Family returned to Buckingham Palace for a reception where they enjoyed a “running buffet” but only a couple of drinks to celebrate, an insider has said.

Before anyone could tuck into the “running buffet”, Prince William is said to have made a short toast, congratulating his father on such a momentous day.

The new monarch thanked everyone who helped make the day a success and then raised a glass to his three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Charles then toasted “those that weren’t there” and is said to have wished his other grandson, Prince Archie a happy fourth birthday “wherever he was”.

The “sweet moment” was followed by everyone enjoying “glasses of fizz and canapes”.

It is said the family ate mini broad bean and tarragon Coronation quiches – the official dish of the Coronation weekend that was developed by chefs at Buckingham Palace.

But, in keeping with Coronation traditions, there was a “modern take” on Coronation chicken served as a canape.

This is because neither the King nor Queen are a fan of the original mayonnaise and curry dish that was developed in Queen Elizabeth’s honour in 1953.

Following the celebration, most of the family headed to Windsor Castle where a private family drinks party was held.

But, according to the Daily Mail’s royal editor Rebecca English, “very little alcohol was served as everyone needed to keep a clear head”.

As for what else might’ve been served at the buffet, it has been said that King Charles loves wild mushrooms – usually in a risotto – and lamb or mutton is said to be his favourite meat.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady said he “cooked [lamb or mutton] a lot at Buckingham Palace” as the [then] Prince of Wales would “request it” because “he’s a big fan of lamb”.

As for what the King did, he left Buckingham Palace and travelled to Highgrove, his country home in Gloucestershire for some rest.

It is not known whether Queen Camilla went with him, but is has been said she enjoys spending time at Ray Mill, her home in Wiltshire.
