Whether you should store potatoes in the fridge or not has long-been a domestic sticking point, with some experts now reverting their view and saying that it’s perfectly fine.

Yet many people might remain unconvinced and will prefer leaving their spuds well away from their refrigerators.

One expert from KJ Refrigeration, however, has given their advice on the matter, imparting their wisdom on the dos and don’ts of storing potatoes.

They said: “For best results, you should store potatoes in a cool, dark area such as a pantry or cupboard.

“There is no need to store potatoes in the fridge, and you should never store raw potatoes in the freezer, as this will cause them to go mushy.”

They also explained that you should never store potatoes and onions together, especially if you are trying to increase the lifespan of either.

This is because onions emit ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening process and means if they are stored together, they can become overripe and prematurely spoil.

Potatoes also possess a large amount of moisture that can cause onions to become leaky and liquefied.

What’s more, potatoes should be kept away from other foods that contain large amounts of ethylene, including apples, bananas and tomatoes.

The expert has therefore advised that you should primarily keep potatoes in a dry, well-ventilated area, and avoid storing them in closed, airtight containers, as they need air to circulate around them and keep moisture levels at bay.

When it comes to washing them, only do so before you use them and, for best results, place some paper towels next to your potatoes to prevent them from retaining excess moisture.

Finally, it’s important to store your potatoes in a dark place because increased exposure to light can cause them to get green spots or even turn green overall, which can cause them to become bitter.
