FISHNET tights and feather trimmings, rouged lips and cropped curls. Welcome to the glitz and glamour of the Roaring Twenties 2.0.
The Golden Globes felt more like The Great Gatsby given the period razzle-dazzle on show from its stars.
First there were the dresses. The Great’s Elle Fanning and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy wore silk slip dresses.
Actress and singer Andra Day, and Ozark’s Julia Garner, plumped for plunging necks and drop waistlines.
Mad Men’s January Jones, with bold red lips, wore a floor-length fringe frock, while Rosamund Pike wore a fantastic red dress designed by fellow Brit Molly Goddard.
Then there were the hairstyles. The Crown’s Emma Corrin sported a slicked-back Eton crop while actresses Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins and Margot Robbie styled grown-out lockdown dos into side partings with glamorous retro waves.
Just as the Jazz Age followed the horrors of world war and millions of deaths in the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, perhaps we need a flash of extravagance in our lives after the nightmarish past year. Back then, silk was becoming available to the middle classes for the first time. Flappers wore shorter hemlines and more make-up.
Likewise, dressing up tops the agenda for us, according to fashion search platform Lyst.
Its experts predict a surge in demand for daring looks and bold colours with plenty of decoration.
While sales of lipstick slumped by 49 per cent when the pandemic hit, beauty industry experts now expect a post-lockdown boom.
‘HUNGRY FOR GLAMOUR’
L’Oreal boss Jean-Paul Agon said: “This will be like the Roaring Twenties. There will be a fiesta in make-up and fragrances.
“Putting on lipstick again will be a symbol of returning to life.”
Designers have caught the mood. Spring-Summer ’21 catwalks saw a comeback for Coco Chanel’s Twenties innovation: The little black dress.
And Fendi made a case for feathers, channelling that decade’s showgirl looks. Now, as we look forward to leaving lockdown, trendsetting TV and music stars are showing us how to do it.
Holly Willoughby showed Twenties inspiration with several of her Dancing On Ice looks, including feathers, sequins and immaculately set curls. And this week chart-topper Dua Lipa flashed fishnets — a flapper staple, breathable enough for plenty of dancing.
Fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen says: “We are ready for escapism and hungry for glamour.
“With freedom looming, we will be dressing up to the nines to celebrate.
“We understand the freedom felt among women in the Twenties after winning the right to vote in 1918. They portrayed it in their wardrobes, with more daring looks including drop-waist dresses and fishnet tights. We are ready to follow suit, celebrating the end of a tough year with bold outfits.”
So say goodbye to sweats on the sofa, ladies, and go all out with ballgowns and bold pouts this summer.
There is going to be plenty to roar about.
