Experienced hikers, deep-sea fishermen, and on-the-scene weather reporters know: If you don’t layer your clothing, you’re at the mercy of the elements. Here’s how to build your first (and second, and third…) line of defense, no matter the situation.

For the Office

You want something that’s warm enough to fight off the AC (why is it always on?) without causing mid-meeting sweats. An Armani Exchange sweater is made of stretchy cotton, so it moves with you, but it’s thin enough that you never feel stifled. Throw on a blazer and bring an unlined, lightweight raincoat for your commute home.

For the Weekend

Who has the time to change when you have things to do? Dress for a morning workout in a technical long-sleeved tee and stretch fleece joggers—all you need is a colorful hoodie for your post-gym meal. Then pop on an O.N.S utility jacket to run errands. It’s lightweight, with ample pockets for stashing keys, billfolds, and receipts.

For Everything Else

When in doubt: Go dark. (Black really does go with everything.) Start with a black polo—the collar is dressy without being fussy—and some dark- rinse jeans. Add a dark Brooks Brothers half-zip sweatshirt, which is sleeker than a hoodie. Then, when the chill of night sets in, pull a packable Uniqlo down vest out of your bag to warm up.

For a Date

You want to look interesting, not loud. So stick with dressier wool trousers—because it’s fall, after all—and a denim jacket (we swear, they’re cool now). Or top off the denim with a Ben Sherman track jacket. It’s colorful but not in an over-doing-it way, and its tapered fit will give your torso that V shape.
