PICKING your child's name can be a big decision for a parent and sometimes it can come back to bite you, as one mum unfortunately had to learn.
Desperately seeking advice when it comes to her three-year-old son's moniker, a mum revealed that she accidentally named her boy after an animal and now he is being teased for it.
The mum revealed it is a nickname that has just stuck ever since her son was little, but now she's second guessing her decision to continue using it.
Posting to Reddit, the mum asked if she was "a huge a***hole" for not using her son's proper name, especially as now other kids are poking fun at him for it.
She wrote: "I have a child named after an animal. It wasn’t intentional, but when I was pregnant with him, I slipped up and called him by this nickname when trying to say his actual name, and everyone loved it and it just stuck.
"For privacy, I won’t share it but assume it’s like Liam/Lamb. So our child has only known their name as 'Lamb', and wouldn’t know you were talking about them if you said 'Liam'.
"He is special needs, which was not anticipated, which makes making the change very hard."
While she loved the cute nickname at first, the mum has come to realise that it's probably not ideal now her son is heading into school.
She explained that her son had been teased by another kid over FaceTime, who started "bahhhhhing at him" down the phone.
"Nobody’s feelings were hurt, and we all laughed, but I realise now that I may be a huge a**hole for giving my kid this name and not fixing it by now," the mum said on reflection.
She revealed that she's even been criticised over her son's accidental name in the past, adding: "We met someone once and when they asked our kids’ names, they got angry when we said this one and said we were cruel and abusive to give a kid a ‘weird’ name.
"I knew a few kids with weird names myself growing up, and for the most part people thought it was cool, not weird, but those were my teen years, and I’m almost forty so what do I know?
"Most people say the name is cute. They could be humouring us. Some people assume that is his name. Some say it reminds them of a beloved movie character, which I see.
"[School] will be popping up soon and we need to figure out what the hell we are doing about this."
Her post seemed to divide fellow parents who came across it online, with some urging the mum to teach her son his real name and others encouraging her to ignore the negativity towards it.
"There are plenty of people called Bear, Fox, Wren, Dove, Birdie, Bunny, Cat, Tiger, Jay, etc. Their lives are not blighted," said one person.
Another commented: "One person's weird is another person's normal. Ignore the unkind people who think this is abuse."
A third suggested: "You really need to teach this kid his legal name, then. What are you going to do when everyone at school, including teachers, sees his name on the roster as 'Liam' and starts calling him that?"
Meanwhile, one mum was urged to change baby daughter’s name after realising just how bad it sounds when you say it out loud.
Plus, this mum-of-11 revealed she only keeps track of kids by ‘colour-coding’ them.
And this woman dressed her daughter up as a ‘basic b***h’ for school and was dubbed the ‘world’s worst parent’.
