THESE celebs all broke the unspoken code by hooking up with a pal’s ex – weaving tangled webs in the process.

Here, we take a look at the stars who managed to save their friendships from disaster – and those who didn't.

BFFs: Bella Hadid, 24 & Selena Gomez, 28

Both dated: The Weeknd, 31

WHAT HAPPENED? Bella and The Weeknd went public at the 2015 Coachella festival, but split in November 2016.

They remained friends till he was spotted kissing Bella’s pal of several years, Selena – then Bella promptly unfollowed Selena on Insta, natch.

Two weeks after The Weeknd’s split from Selena in October 2017, he was seen leaving Bella’s place, and by April 2018 they were getting it on at Coachella again.

They split for good in August 2019.

FRIENDS AGAIN? Not quite. Bella liked a selfie Selena posted in May 2019. Six months later, Selena commented “stunning” on Bella’s picture.

But then Bella deleted the post and Selena responded to the news with “that sucks” and a crying emoji.

She later apologised for speaking out and added that it was a “misunderstanding”.

It looked like things were better in May 2020 when Bella followed Selena… But just 24 hours later she had pressed “unfollow”.

Anyone else completely exhausted?

BFFs: Ed Sheeran, 30 & Niall Horan, 27

Both dated: Ellie Goulding, 34

WHAT HAPPENED? Ed and Ellie were introduced by Taylor Swift, and the pair were spotted holding hands in the crowd at the MTV Music Awards in August 2013.

Ellie denied that she and Ed ever dated, saying: “I love that holding hands with my friends means we’re an item,” but Ed rebutted this, saying: “Normal people don’t hold hands if they’re just friends.

"It was going on. And now it’s not.”

Ellie went on to date 1D star Niall later that year, and when Ed released Don’t, about a famous ex who cheated on him with a friend, fans put two and two together…

Ed said: “I just won’t say who it’s about because… Everyone f**king knows anyway.”

FRIENDS AGAIN? Niall and Ed’s bromance survived – they were spotted partying together at Taylor Swift’s Billboard Music Awards after-party in 2015, and last March Niall revealed Ed rang him to encourage him to write songs in lockdown.

Hurrah!

BFFs: Taylor Swift, 31 & Katy Perry, 36

Both dated: John Mayer, 43

WHAT HAPPENED? Taylor and John dated after duetting on her Fearless tour in May 2009.

But when it soured in February 2010, Tay-Tay lifted the lid on the relationship by writing Dear John.

Her pal Katy dated John on and off between 2012 and 2016 – they wrote love songs about each other and Katy said he was the best sex she’d ever had.

If that wasn’t enough to cause a ruckus, Katy later recruited Taylor’s dancers for her tour, leading Swifty to write Bad Blood and describe them as “straight-up enemies”.

FRIENDS AGAIN? Amazingly, yes!

The feud continued until 2017, when Katy apologised, saying: “I’m ready to let it go,” before sending Taylor an actual olive branch.

Taylor then sent Katy some cookies with “Peace at last” iced on them, and they also appeared together in the video for Taylor’s single You Need To Calm Down. Girl power!

BFFs: Lisa Armstrong, 44 & Anne-Marie Corbett, 43

Both dated: Ant McPartlin, 45

WHAT HAPPENED? Lisa and Ant met as teen pop stars in 1994.

They married in 2006, but in June 2017 Ant went into rehab for alcohol and prescription drug problems.

The following year, the couple announced they were splitting and by the summer it was confirmed that Ant was dating his PA Anne-Marie Corbett – who Lisa had regarded as a friend.

The couple got engaged on Christmas Eve 2020 with a ring Ant designed himself.

FRIENDS AGAIN? Definitely not. Lisa said she was hurt not to have learnt about Ant’s new relationship before it was made public.

“To think she was MY friend,” she tweeted. “My friend and OUR PA who I let into OUR home.”

Lisa went on to like several not-so cryptic tweets, including one about “trusting a PA who has ripped your life apart”.

BFFs: Jamie Laing, 32 & Sam Thompson, 28

Both dated: Sophie Habboo, 26

WHAT HAPPENED? Sam and Sophie, AKA “Habbs”, split in December 2018 when she dumped him on Made In Chelsea after six months together.

She became close to co-star Jamie, although they insisted they were just friends, before finally going on a date in April 2019.

It’s gone from strength to strength, but Sam was left devastated.

In August 2019, he said: “Maybe I am wrong to be so hurt, but I’m still hurt, for sure. I don’t think you should really do that to another friend.” Ouch.

FRIENDS AGAIN? All’s well that ends well and Sam, who is now dating MIC’s Zara McDermott, doesn’t hold a grudge.

He said: “I would have liked her to pick someone else – not my best mate – but hey, what can you do?”

He even consulted Jamie for relationship advice after Zara cheated on him last October. Their friendship is clearly made to last!
