With the premiere of Justice League: The Snyder Cut scheduled for 2021, director Zack Snyder clarified what kind of new footage fans can expect from the upcoming film.

Speaking to ComicBook, Snyder revealed that a “very small portion of the movie” involves the new scenes he shot. “First of all, let’s just clarify, there’s like two bits that I added,” he said. “One bit that I had really sort of hoped to shoot in post but never got the chance to and then one, that scene, with Jared. This whole little piece with Jared. The truth is, the rest of the four hours of the movie are really just what I shot. The truth is I was in a struggle with the studio, you know and famously we had a lot of stuff we had to do, and make it funny, and all that stuff. I just kind of, in a slightly subversive way, just kept also doing my thing at the same time so I would have, what I believed would be closer to what I wanted to do without any influence. I always try to shoot that way anyway. I always try to shoot what I think is right. Putting the movie back together was like an archaeologist, pulling all the pieces, what I had, what I had shot, and what would never have seen the light of day even thought I had shot it.”

He added, “Like 80-something percent of the movie has never been seen by anyone, visual effects wise, and that’s not even including the scenes that you guys have never seen that don’t have visual effects. That part’s really exciting and I can’t wait for everyone to experience this giant scale adventure the way I intended everyone to experience it.”

The director also touched on why he was such a strong supporter of Superman’s black suit. “I really wanted the black suit; it made sense for me because…Superman is a character notoriously who does not grow. He is like a rock and everything just smashes against him. And we learn about ourselves by trying to change a thing that’s unchangeable,” he explained. “That’s really the old way, the old Superman, whereas I felt like my Superman had to, at every step, sort of level up and learn something, and be something different, because in the end, the idea or what I had planned was that the final step for Superman, [was] his real return, or his real coming into what I would consider the classic Superman. We don’t really get it in this movie, the classic Superman. I also feel like the black suit is a great time delineator. So if you see a flashback or a flash-forward, him in the black suit lets you know where you are in tine because it’s very particular to this certain arc. So I always was excited about using the black suit to kind of lock us in to when he goes form the black suit back to the red and blue suit, and then when he’s in the red and blue suit what that means, and when eh actually goes back to it, what does it mean?”

Justice League: The Snyder Cut is expected to premiere on HBO Max this 2021. Stay tuned for an exact release date.
