Walmart’s “Black & Unlimited Adventure Series” highlights the stories of young Black people who take on fun outdoor adventures that may be unconventional to underrepresented communities. This program also serves to inspire young African Americans to reach beyond their comfort zones to discover summertime activities such as surfing, hiking, biking and more. For its first video installment, Walmart profiles Pro Surfer Hunter Jones, a remarkable athlete who advocates for the growth of the sport by uplifting the next generation of diverse surfers.
Hunter Jones is a professional surfer who competes in the World Surf League (WSL). Throughout his three-year professional career, Jones has gained sponsorship opportunities from brands such as Otis Eyewear, LARID apparel, and Body Glove. Beyond the accolades, Jones also advocates for social and racial equality in the sport – he’s a co-founder of One Planet One Person, a climate and social equality initiative that aims to galvanize the next generation of surfers by creating an inclusive platform they can turn to.
Being socially involved outside of surfing has allowed the Manhattan Beach native to re-imagine what it means to be a pro surfer of color. Jones has utilized his identity within surfing to be a role model and encourage young Black kids to discover and excel at the sport, something they might not have turned to since surfing has traditionally lacked diversity. But now, with Jones renowned as a trailblazer in the sport, he’s able to be that bastion of hope kids can look up to. “I just want to inspire the next generation of black surfers,” Jones said. “Encourage them more to push their boundaries and get into the water and enjoy all the benefits the ocean has to offer.”
