An upcoming The Batman spin-off being developed for HBO Max will focus on Arkham Asylum, director Matt Reeves has shared.

The original idea for the series was to focus on corruption occurring within the Gotham City Police Department and would have taken place as a prequel set during Batman’s first year fighting crime, Games Radar reported.

“The GCDP thing, that story has kind of evolved,” Reeves told The Cyber Nerds. “We’ve actually now moving more into the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham as it relates coming off of our movie, and some of the characters, again in their origins that you would – almost leaning into the idea of – it’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.”

“The idea of, again the way that Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character, so that you go into this environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh,” Reeves continued.

Arkham — which is known as the Arkham Asylum in the series, but was referred to as Arkham State Hospital in The Batman — has housed many of Batman’s foes, including Joker and Riddler.

Showmakers have otherwise shared few details about the series. Another spin-off focusing on Colin Farrell‘s Penguin is already in the works, following Oswald Cobblepot’s supervillain origin story in Gotham.

In other entertainment news, the Star Wars Celebration is coming back this year.
