Stone Island has teased their latest collaboration with New Balance: a brand-new silhouette dubbed the 991v2. Though New Balance fans may initially see the model name as a typo (“didn’t you mean 990v2?”) the collaboration, from what little of it has been shown so far, looks to be an entirely new silhouette.
The Italian sportswear company and the USA-based footwear purveyor first joined forces for a special take on the 577 all the way back in 2013, making 2023 the 10th anniversary of their collaborative partnership and an apt time to introduce an entirely new silhouette. The 991v2 teaser doesn’t give much to go off of, as it’s a picture of the outsole that reveals little more than a large black Stone Island compass logo nestled under translucent rubber. The moniker, however, infers that the aesthetic may be a hybrid one, a la past silhouettes like the 997.5, which combined a 997 upper with a 998 midsole.
Since the above-mentioned 2013 collaboration, Stone Island and New Balance have cranked out more than a few high-heat releases, starting with a RC ELITE SI created by the Tokyo Design Studio in 2021 that was followed up by a FuelCell RC Elite V2, a 574 Legacy and a camo-coated football boot and kit collection in 2022. Earlier this year, the two dropped their high-tech FuelCell C_1 as well, making this forthcoming style their sixth collaborative effort.
A release date, pricing information or a full look at the Stone Island x New Balance 991v2 has yet to be revealed, but keep it locked to Hypebeast for more info as it’s made available.
