Contemporary artist Nina Chanel Abney is furthering her relationship with Jordan Brand, but the newest development takes their efforts a step further. In line with Abney’s artistic philosophy that centers the exploration of race, gender, homophobia and more, her latest endeavor takes form in a collaborative genderless capsule.
Connected to her childhood memories of Chicago and her revival of old basketball courts in New York and North Carolina, the new collection honors art, basketball and family. By venturing into ready-to-wear garments, accessories and footwear, the new collection takes Abney’s vibrant, yet socially conscious work into a new medium. The 11-piece capsule is comprised of a reversible jersey, funnel-neck top, tracksuit-inspired jacket, pants, sports bra, t-shirts, hoodies and accessories. Dipped in shades of black, red, green and gray, the pieces come to life with several graphic illustrations showcasing the life of Michael Jordan.
“No one understands the power, relevance, and reach of basketball culture more than Nina Chanel Abney, as she is a living embodiment of its legacy. This collaboration is as much about the design of an idea as it is about the product,” said Jordan Brand Women’s general manager, Andrea Perez. “While much of the work we do at Jordan Brand is to prepare the now and next generation for their futures, we’re doing so by expanding the reach of the Jumpman so that it can ultimately be a symbol for what it means to break boundaries while building bridges.”
Highlights of the collection include hoodies and t-shirts that reveal pivotal moments like Jordan’s first NBA championship win, his time in baseball and his return to basketball.
