If you own both a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, you may find yourselves split between playing either Baldur’s Gate 3 or Starfield this year.
September looks set to play host to a Barbie vs. Oppenheimer style confrontation between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners as two massive role-playing games – Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield – are scheduled to launch on the exact same day.
PC owners don’t have anything to worry about since Baldur’s Gate 3’s PC version will arrive on August 3, giving them a whole month to blitz through as much of that game as possible before Starfield arrives.
In fact, Baldur’s Gate 3’s PC launch was originally just a week before Starfield so developer Larian Studios moved it up to avoid clashing. Yet role-player fans on consoles will find themselves spoilt for choice come September 6.
Trying to juggle two meaty role-playing games is far more of a monumental (and exhausting) task than trying to pull a Barbenheimer, but unlike the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield aren’t technically clashing.
After all, Starfield isn’t coming to PS5 (at least not now that Microsoft owns it) and Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox port has no launch window to speak of thanks to the Xbox Series S making development more difficult.
In fact, we almost suspect Sony deliberately suggested pushing the PlayStation 5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 out on the same day as Starfield. After all, there are some PlayStation 5 owners who are very salty about not getting to play Bethesda’s newest game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a high fantasy Dungeons & Dragons inspired game, by the makers of the excellent Divinity: Original Sin 2, but having an alternative to Starfield may coax over starving role-player fans on PlayStation 5.
It certainly makes more sense than waiting for the Starfield hype to die down and launch Baldur’s Gate on PS5 in October. Publishers are already fighting for space that month with Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, and so much more all launching within days of each other.
Anyone who happens to own both a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, though, may find themselves struggling over what to pick. Both games promise to be incredibly huge, with Starfield offering more than 1,000 planets to explore and Baldur’s Gate 3 promising upwards of 200 hours’ worth of content in a single playthrough.
Then again, only Baldur’s Gate 3 will let you have sex with a bear, whereas Starfield’s romantic options are so far limited to humans (with some toe-curling dialogue). We’ll let you decide whether that’s a point in Baldur’s Gate 3’s favour or not.
