Love Island viewers were understandably confused when Jessie Wynter comforted Will Young as he broke down in tears after straying.

On Thursday night’s episode, the honeymoon period of Casa Amor was cut short and the recoupling kicked off as Islanders had to decide where their hearts lay.

After having a brief dalliance with Layla Al-Momani, 28, Will, 23, had been dreading having to tell Jessie, 26, that he’d kissed someone else.

While they both chose to stay coupled up, host Maya Jama hit him with the dicey question once the pair sat down together.

Admitting the week had been ‘really really tough’, Will then admitted that he hadn’t been loyal.

‘No, no not completely no,’ was his reply when asked if he was faithful.

‘I think kind of like on the first night there were a lot of emotions and all that and me and Layla had a kiss.

‘I’m not going to lie it was really, really tough and the couple of days after that trying to mentally get through that, I knew I had let myself and you down and it has been a massive struggle,’ he said to Jessie.

He added: ‘I honestly feel like the worst human.’

Breaking down, Will was overcome with emotion, but even as Jessie was getting upset, she comforted him.

‘Don’t be sorry, it’s fine,’ she said.

She then explained that she was ‘fine’ but added that she ‘didn’t have any words’ to describe what was running through her head.

When Layla said she believed Will and her had a connection, Jessie then addressed him again and said she didn’t think he would have betrayed her.

People watching along at home said their hearts were breaking.

Holding herself together, Jessie even went so far as to apologise to Layla and compliment her.

‘Layla I’m sorry you got in the middle of it…you’re a gorgeous gal.’

Her kindness was made even more awkward after the fact Layla didn’t quite seem to care about hurting Jessie’s feelings when she first met Will.

Getting to know each other around the fire pit earlier this week, things started heating up after she told Will: ‘I think you bring more to her than she brings to you,’ in reference to Jessie.

Love Island continues tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV2.
