The Coronation of King Charles III pulled in more than 19 million viewers across the UK on Saturday – but other people had better things to watch.

BBC1 had a peak of 13 million tuning in – plus 1.7 million for BBC’s sign language coverage – with ITV hitting 3.3 million and another 1 million watching on various news channels.

However, the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board figures from Overnights – which don’t include numbers for those watching on streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer or in public settings like pubs or big outdoor screens – show that not everyone was watching.

Indeed, Channel 4 chose not to broadcast the Coronation, instead airing Rowan Atkinson’s 2018 movie Johnny English Strikes Again.

An impressive 140,000 decided to watch the action comedy – although there is still a Coronation twist.

In the original 2003 Johnny English film, Atkinson’s hapless titular character disrupts a coronation only to be accidentally crowned himself.

However, in the movie he decides to return the crown to the Queen, earning himself a knighthood in return.

The actual real life Coronation had its own connection too, with Atkinson being a real life friend of the King and Queen Camilla for a long time, having been invited to their wedding and his private 60th birthday celebrations.

He was in attendance over the weekend, but Twitter saw a chance for him to recreate Johnny English by crashing the historic event.
